Have you ever seen a field of sunflowers? Have you been driving away from the sun, and had a field of sunflowers, staring at you? Sunflowers are one of the beautiful pieces of creation, that God has made, not just for our enjoyment, but to tell us something.
Sunflowers typically grow between 5 and 12 ft tall. They grow very quickly. From the bud stage, they face the sun at all times. They look towards the sun starting in the east, and ending in the west. They are bright and cheery, with their yellow, orange, and red petals. They attract many different types of birds, and bees – especially canaries. They produce yummy seeds, and they are overall, amazing flowers.
In my backyard, we have sunflowers planted in a corner. They grow over our composter near the fence, and they always attract the prettiest birds. They look so beautiful, that it got me thinking…
God made sunflowers to be examples for us. Sunflowers grow tall very quickly. Christians should grow quickly – not physically, but spiritually. They are bright and cheery. We as Christians should be bright and cheery, and not focus on the bad in our world. They attract beautiful animals. We should attract as well, not animals, but humans. We should be attractive to other non-Christians, who may or may not be looking for God. Sunflowers produce wonderful sunflower seeds. We should produce seeds. We should be telling others about God, planting seeds in their hearts. Christians should produce good things, that attracts others toward us, and toward God. And finally, sunflowers face the sun at all times. Christians should be facing the Son at all times. Jesus gives us our strength, just as the sun gives sunflowers their strength.
Next time I look into a field of sunflowers, I will be reminded to take their example, and face the Son.
